Spain Currency
Spain uses the Euro (€) as its official currency. The Euro is the common currency used by many countries within the European Union.
- Pre-Euro Era: Before adopting the Euro, Spain's currency was the Spanish Peseta. The Peseta was introduced in 1868, replacing the previous Spanish currency system based on the real.
- Transition to the Euro: Spain joined the Eurozone, and the Euro was introduced as an accounting currency in 1999. Physical Euro banknotes and coins started circulating in Spain on January 1, 2002, which marked the end of the Peseta as a physical currency. However, the Peseta continued to be used for cash transactions alongside the Euro until February 28, 2002.
